Gospel Life Church is founded upon the belief that God is sovereign and that He has a plan to call people from the city of Chicago for salvation. In His infinite wisdom and grace, God chooses to use the foolish and the weak to confound the wise and the strong of the world. The reason... so that He would receive all the glory.
Gospel Life Church is a faith project in that it is made up of people who have faith in God and rely completely upon Him to accomplish His eternal plan and purpose. We believe that the preaching of God's Word has power to save people just as the heavens and the earth were created by the power of God's spoken Word. Gospel Life Church is the story of the continuation of God's unfolding plan of redemption in the history of mankind.
So how did Gospel Life Church get started? In September 2007, John Ro moved to Chicago to marry Wenny, his fiancee at the time. In March 2008, they got married within a week of John transferring his pastoral credentials to the Presbytery of the Midwest of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. It was mind-boggling how John survived the preparation for a wedding and an examination by the pastors and elders of the OPC.
In September 2008, the Presbytery approved a four-year plan starting from 2009 to call John Ro to start a church in downtown Chicago, specifically the South Loop. It started out with home worship services every other Sunday with just John and Wenny and her two sisters. They were not able to find a public place to worship in their target area. They looked a little bit northwest to the West Loop and were able to rent a classroom at Whitney Young High School in the hope that they could invite their friends and acquaintances.
The majority of the people they invited could not come for one reason or another. There were seven people for that first public worship service. John got busy sharing the gospel on the streets and telling people about the young church plant. Eventually by the summer of 2010, they had filled out the classroom and built up enough funds to make an effort to find a place to rent in the original target area - the South Loop of downtown Chicago.
Due to a lack of public meeting places and affordable rent, the search was difficult. But by God's grace, they were able to find a retail space in the 1900 Pointe building on the corner of State Street and Archer Avenue. The location is ideal since it has a parking lot where people can park for free and it is only one block from two train stations (CTA Red Line: Cermak-Chinatown stop and CTA Green Line: Cermak-McCormick stop).
On September 19, 2010, they had their opening service. This time, the majority of the people they invited did come. There were 37 people there to celebrate and give thanks to God for providing a suitable place to hold worship services and bible studies. On Friday, March 22, 2015, the Presbytery of the Midwest of the OPC approved the transfer of the oversight of this church plant to the session of Westminster OPC.
We pray that God may continue to build upon the momentum of this young church plant, so that it may bloom and grow. Please pray for Gospel Life Church - that we may be a source of good news and of spiritual blessings for the people of Chicago, especially for the people of the South Loop.
